World War I Code Talkers Honored in Virtual Walk this November

Published October 29, 2024

DURANT, Okla. – The Choctaw Nation Warrior Wellness and Healthy Lifestyles teams will host the first virtual walk honoring the World War I Choctaw Code Talkers. Participants can sign up for the virtual program by visiting the Code Talker Virtual Walk event webpage and registering through November 1.

Participants will walk at least 6,000 steps per day on their own schedule during the month using a mobile app. Registration is free of charge and open to everyone across the country who would like to learn about the important role the Choctaw Nation played in world history.

Code Talkers were soldiers who used their native language to confuse the enemy. The virtual walk uses an app that will trace the routes of the Choctaw soldiers and educate participants of historical landmarks.

“Hosting the virtual walk during November has many special significances,” says Warrior Wellness Program Manager, LCDR Courtney Trent, MSW, LCSW. “Not only are we celebrating Native American Heritage Month with a team that was pivotal to winning a world war, but we are able to also honor them as servicemen on Veterans Day by walking and learning what they encountered and persevered along the way.”

Participants who finish the walk will receive a medal. For more information visit the Code Talker Virtual Walk.
