Over 1,000 Celebrated at Choctaw Nation’s Elder Appreciation Day

DURANT, Okla. – Choctaw Nation’s Annual Elder Appreciation Day was another successful event. Over 1,000 Choctaw Nation elders gathered at the Event Center in Durant, Okla. to celebrate their heritage, learn more about Choctaw Nation programs, and have a bit of fun.

The annual event provided transportation for the elders throughout the Choctaw Nation reservation. The elders use this event to socialize with friends, so the relaxed atmosphere provided activities and social time. The elders were entertained by traditional dancers during lunch that was provided by Roots Café in the Choctaw Nation Headquarters.

The event had a regalia parade with a winner for the most traditional regalia, name tag contest, and Choctaw Hymn singing contest. The Wellness Center’s Walk-a-Thon winners were recognized as well as the 2022 Outstanding Elders, Ricky Dearmore from Smithville, Okla. and Diane McGee of Atoka, Okla.

“Everyone had a great time,” says Jana Underwood, senior nutrition program manager. “It’s always a fun event for our elders that has grown each year.”
