Inaugural Choctaw Flag Day

Halito,

I’m excited to announce that in two weeks, we will celebrate our inaugural Choctaw Flag Day!

On November 14, 2020, Tribal Council voted to approve a Resolution recognizing and honoring October 16, 2021, as Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma Flag Day.

This date is significant because on October 16, 1860, the Choctaw General Council, led by Chief George Hudson, passed an act at the regular annual session held at Doaksville, that created the Great Seal of the Choctaw Nation.

The Great Seal of the Choctaw Nation, which consists of an unstrung bow, encompassing three arrows, and a smoking pipe-hatchet, symbolizes the history and tradition of the Choctaw people.

In fact, it has been used on all official papers of the Choctaw Nation since 1860. For more information see The History of the Great Seal of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.

October 16th will be a momentous day! I encourage our tribal members and the Chahta proud to take some time and reflect on Choctaw Flag Day, because a flag is not just a symbol, but a way for a sovereign nation to portray itself to the rest of the world.

Yakoke and God bless!
