Elsie Hicks

Choctaw was Elsie (Billy) Hicks’ first language as a child. When she went to school, she would speak Choctaw at home and switch to English when she boarded the school bus. She said her entire family still speaks the language and communicates in Choctaw when they get together. In her church, there is also singing and preaching in the Choctaw language.
