Choctaw Nation Sends Three Teams to Stickball World Series

DURANT, Okla. – The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma (CNO) is fielding three teams for the World Series of Stickball this year. Local players have already participated in preliminary matches and a few early bracket games, with the Championship Finals to be held July 15 and 16 at the 72nd Choctaw Indian Fair, on the Choctaw Indian Reservation in Mississippi.

The World Series of Stickball takes place in conjunction with the annual fair. The event includes cultural activities, such as dancing, art, traditional foods, and a princess pageant; also, nightly concerts, a carnival, and sports competitions.

CNO’s Women’s Team Coach Jared Tom, said, the players have been gearing up for the series since February, and even held an all-day training a couple of weeks ago in Broken Bow. Since then, players have continued practice in their individual communities across southeast Oklahoma.

“This will be our 12th year playing in the World Series,” Tom said. “It would have been our 13th, but COVID canceled it in 2020.”

Tvshka Homma is the Men’s team; Tvshka Homma Ohoyo, the Women’s team, and the Tvshka Homma 35+ Team. All three teams are comprised of a majority of players from within the Choctaw Nation. Most are from Durant, Broken Bow, Wilburton, and Talihina. So far, all the Tvshka Homma teams had wins advancing them in the series.

• The men’s 35+ Championship Finals in the World Series of Stickball will be played at 10:15 p.m. Friday, July 15.
• The Women’s Championship Finals will begin at 11:30 p.m. Friday, July 15.
• The Men’s Championship Finals is set for 10:15 p.m. Saturday, July 16.
